The Department of Chemistry of Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) and the Department of Chemistry of Sorbonne University are co-organizing the 3rd International Winter School entitled “Towards a Green and Sustainable World”, which will take place from February 5 to 27, 2025, at the University Campus of Kavala.

The main objective of this International Winter School is to promote Green Chemistry and Sustainable Development through joint educational initiatives and collaborative learning.

Key Points of the Program

The program is designed to provide participants with fundamental knowledge and skills related to green chemistry and sustainability. In particular, it focuses on the following key areas:

  • Principles of Green Chemistry: Students will explore the 12 fundamental principles of Green Chemistry and learn how to apply them in both research and everyday contexts.
  • Environmental Challenges: Through case studies and interactive discussions, participants will propose solutions to pressing global issues such as climate change and plastic waste management.
  • Innovative Tools and Technologies: The program introduces participants to cutting-edge technologies such as CO₂ utilization catalysts, green nanomaterials, and biomass valorization.

Innovative Educational Model – Blended Learning

The Winter School adopts a blended learning approach, combining distance and face-to-face instruction to ensure maximum flexibility and high-quality learning outcomes. Specifically:

  • Asynchronous Preparation: Students will independently access online learning materials and interactive quizzes via the Moodle platform.
  • On-Site Learning: During the face-to-face phase, participants will attend lectures and workshops delivered by leading professors from Sorbonne University and work in groups on real-world environmental challenges.
  • Collaborative Review and Evaluation: Through group activities and presentations, participants will consolidate and reflect on the knowledge and skills they have gained.

Teaching Team and Assessment

The program is delivered by a team of specialized faculty members from Sorbonne University, including Prof. Ali Abou-Hassan, Prof. Franck Launay, and Prof. Julie Oble, who will guide students throughout the educational process.

Student assessment will be based on online quizzes, research reports, and oral presentations, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging learning experience.

The program is free of charge and open to Chemistry students of DUTH who wish to contribute to the advancement of a greener and more sustainable society.
Participants who successfully complete the Winter School will receive a Certificate of Attendance issued by the DUTH Lifelong Learning Center (ΚΕ.ΔΙ.ΒΙ.Μ.), corresponding to 3 ECTS credits, in recognition of their academic achievement.
